The World Green Organisation has entered into a partnership with The Link to bring wasted food from fresh markets directly to those in need
WGO has entered into a partnership with the Link to bring wasted food from fresh markets directly to those in need via ‘Linking Food With Love – From the Golden Age to the Greens’ Surplus Food Donation Project. The project aims at transforming unsold food collected from fresh markets into food for the needy.
To prepare for the project, WGO analysed the quantities of wasted food and municipal waste in the participating markets, so as to have a better understanding on the food waste (edible fresh food) produced by the markets. Between November 2014 and January 2015, WGO conducted a waste audit in Shek Lei and H.A.N.D.S fresh market (former Yau Oi Market). The wasted food found in these markets was classified into edible and nonedible categories. Furthermore, the food was sub-divided into four categories: vegetable, meat, seafood, and miscellaneous. Food donated by the stall owners included cole crops, vegetables with poor presentation, unsold vegetables, and other processed food; among them, 30%–40% of the total food waste was still edible. It would be such a big waste if that edible food is sent to a landfill. Thus, through this project, the youth volunteers help to deliver the donated vegetables to the elderly in the vicinity. In sum, this project implements wasted food reduction at the source, and effective use of resources. Inter-generational harmony is also promoted as families in need get support.

Survey on the full implementation of plastic shopping bags charging
|
|
Starting from 1st April onwards, Hong Kong is exercising the full implementation of the plastic shopping bags charging scheme. Under that scheme, certain bags are exempted, such as bags used for food hygiene reasons, and bags provided with the services. Apart from that, if citizens request plastic shopping bags while shopping, they will have to pay at least 50 cents. Recently, WGO had conducted a survey, and discovered that nearly 70% of the citizens surveyed understood the exemption items. However, when asked about the details of that scheme, only 42% of the citizens surveyed could point out the scheme will be fully implemented in all retail outlets. In order to help the citizens to understand the details of the scheme, WGO carried out promotional activities to educate the public during the E-Max 'green consciousness carnival’. Customers were encouraged to bring their own bags while doing shopping at the carnival, and received shopping discounts for doing so.
