Social Innovation Inventor – Competition for Innovative Design 2014 / 2015
Last year, World Green Organisation (WGO) held “Social Innovation Inventor – Competition for Innovative Design”. This year, WGO joined hands with Charles K. Kao Foundation for Alzheimer’s disease to launch the competition for the second year. This year’s competition aimed to nurture secondary and tertiary students’ creativity and to address the social challenge of an ageing population, particularly the rising numbers of dementia and Alzheimer’s cases in Hong Kong. Students were challenged to design safe and environmentally-friendly homes for elderly patients with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
This year, a total of 122 applications were received, with the professional judging team selecting 10 finalists from each of the Secondary School Group and the Tertiary Education Group during the Final Competition this past May. The contestants tried to come up with innovative solutions to address the major daily problems faced by dementia patients, such as loss of short-term memory, inability to take care of oneself, and severe emotional and behavioral changes. The contestants created tailor–made interior designs to improve the quality of life of patients and their family. The award ceremony, held on 26th June at Ma On Shan Plaza, presented the champion, first runners-up and second runners-up from each group with their prizes. The two champion teams will be awarded with a 5-day Study Trip to the University of Cambridge in the UK in July. The carbon emissions from this trip will, of course, be offset.
