With the warm support from our patrons, WGO successfully launched “Splashing Mid-Autumn Charity Drinks” at Bagnodesign. On that night, patrons had fun and enjoyed free flow of beverages, including red and white wine from South Bank Estate and coffee from Arissto. Added to that, they could enjoy the micro film regarding energy poverty. Last but not least, they could purchase skin care and personal products donated by L’Occitane and Melvita. World’s First DNA Technology for Endangered Shark Species Identification

World’s First DNA Technology for Endangered Shark Species Identification

Prior to 14th September 2014, three endangered shark species were included in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Effective on 14th September 2014, five additional endangered shark species were formally included in Appendix II of CITES.

In July of this year, WGO commissioned Vitargent to buy nine dried shark fin samples based on random sampling from different dried seafood stores located in Sheung Wan. It was alarming to discover that, according to Vitargent’s DNA test on three shark fin samples, one of the samples belong to the future restricted species, the smooth hammerhead shark (Sphyrna zygaena).

WGO is committed to protecting the endangered shark species, and urged the public to stop consuming shark fins. WGO also recommended that the Hong Kong government should conduct regular inspections on the shark fins trade and monitor whether the shark fins belong to the endangered species. Read more
