The public lacks awareness and knowledge regarding the urgency of the waste issue |
The Government's plan to extend the three landfills and the construction of incinerator at Shek Kwu Chau has raised much public controversy. Last year, WGO commissioned the Statistical Consulting Unit of the Department of Management Sciences of the City University Hong Kong, to conduct a public poll on this issue. The results shown that 53.2% of survey respondents supported landfills extension and 21.1% opposed the idea. Whilst 69.3% supported building the incinerator and 11% are against it.
We also found out that only a small number of respondents were aware that the landfills will be full around 2015. However, construction of the incinerator takes about 8 years. This shows that the general public are not aware of the urgency of the waste issue. WGO believes that more people will support the incinerator and landfill extension if the Government enhances the public's knowledge on the waste issue. Please visit here for details. |

Brand new green current affairs platform: "The Big Picture" |
A new online platform about current green affairs called "The Big Picture" is now live and will be providing the latest environmental protection information and an opportunity for the public to share their views. Staying close to the hottest green topics, it allows all Hong Kong citizens to join together and create the "Big Picture" of current green issues. Part of the platform will be an online forum, "On Fire", which invites experts and people from different sectors to express their opinions, helping the general public to have a clearer picture of the situation.
"On Fire" starts off with the recent controversial topic – construction of an incinerator and extension of the Tseung Kwan O landfill. We have invited the Honorable Mr. Bernard Charnwut Chan, GBS, JP (陳智思太平紳士), Dr. Hon Elizabeth Quat, JP (葛珮帆博士) and Sai Kung District Council member, Ms. Christine Fong (方國珊女士) to share their views on this issue. So, don't hesitate and visit www.thewgo.org/bigpicture to see what they have to say! |

Back to Nature – Connection: Paintings by Claire Lau |
Leaving the comfort of the studio, French-born Hong Kong artist Claire Lau completes all her large paintings outdoors from beginning to end, despite summer heat, winter chill, and insect bites. Claire feels that the city dwellers are increasingly connected online but becoming more detached to their surroundings. By setting up her easel outdoors, she invites the public to lift their heads from their devices, and to notice, observe, and build a relationship with their environment.
Claire's solo exhibition "Connection" at PubArt Gallery features paintings from her Hong Kong Banyan series. A percentage of proceeds from paintings sales will be donated to the World Green Organisation. The exhibition starts from 8th April to 31st May (Every Tuesday to Saturday) and opening reception is on 11th April 6 p.m. For more details, please click here. |
