Over 100 Offices Go Green

The United Nations Millennium Development Goals – Green Office Awards Labeling Scheme (GOALS), which was organised by World Green Organisation (WGO) and supported by Junior Chamber International North District, attracted over 100 offices to join the journey to go green. In the green audit process, we were pleased to find companies have been actively taking actions to reduce their energy consumption and waste. Some of their green practices were so creative that worth sharing. For example, a company with automatic lighting system to switch off all the lights at 7 p.m., and some companies introduced "low carbon meal" in their canteens.
Assessment has been completed. Successful applicants will be awarded the Better World Company Label and WGO Green Office Label in December. Right now, let's give these companies a round of applause for their efforts in building a greener world.

CNN and Other Media Speak for Energy Poverty |
WGO visited the families of sub-divided flats and measured the indoor temperatures of their homes in July. Due to energy poverty, some residents put up with the high temperatures without using fan or air-conditioning. Living in such condition will have adverse impact on their health in long term. In order to help the sub-divided flat tenants to relieve their hardships, we gave away energy efficiency appliances and provided energy-saving advice to them. Over 20 newspapers, 8 radio and TV channels reported this poverty news story and our action. International media CNN also produced a follow up story. We hope that the extensive media coverage will draw attention to the problem and ignite changes.
Furthermore, we shared our thoughts in the annual summit of the Commission on Poverty held in late September. We urged the Commission to set up a fund to help families struggling with energy poverty. One of the suggested funding initiatives is to offer utility subsidies to this underprivileged group through non-governmental organisations.
