The Unbearable Heat in Poor Homes

The Unbearable Heat in Poor Homes
During the hot days of summer, the cramped spaces of partitioned homes are sweltering. The World Green Organisation (WGO) has placed temperature and humidity monitors in several of them and has discovered that one of the homes in Kwun Tong reached 35.7°C, 5°C higher than the temperature reported by the weather station. To save on electricity bills, the residents refuse to turn on any fans or air conditioning, opting to endure the heat or going to a nearby shopping mall. This issue has recently sparked up concerns as to what can be done for these residents.

WGO continues to seek methods to lower their financial burdens through energy saving tips, encouraging more efficient energy use, and providing higher efficiency appliances from sponsors. The Organisation also advocates alleviating energy poverty through the Commission on Poverty or the Community Care Fund and using approaches such as deploying NGOs to distribute utility subsidies.

Food Waste Management – An Urgent Matter

Food Waste Management – An Urgent Matter
3600 tonnes of unused and uneaten food are dumped at Hong Kong's 3 existing landfills each day. The amount is equivalent to eight 5kg rice bags of food waste disposed onto the landfill every second. The government has already planned for organic waste treatment plants at Lantau Island and Northern Hong Kong in conjunction with "Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign" to reduce nearly 1000 tonnes of food waste, but that still leaves approximately 2500 tonnes being discarded at the landfills.

Our organisation has recently initiated the "Turning Trash into Gems - Tseung Kwan O Residential Waste Reduction & Food Waste Management Pilot Scheme" at the Oscar by the Sea residential estate that will provide the residents with a free food waste collection service with the collected waste being processed into fish feed. In a mere 7 days, over 100 families have already signed up and our goal of 200 families was exceeded in 2 weeks. This illustrates the citizens' support to reduce waste at its source, working as an encouragement for the government to swiftly implement a city-wide food waste collection system and to provide comprehensive assistance for the development of recycling industry.
